Not all of us know this, and it is really worth knowing that on Tuesdays most museums in Krakow offer free admission. The initiative applies to children, pupils, students as well as tourists, residents or retirees. In a word - everyone is welcome and the gates of Krakow museums are wide open to you... and without spending any money. Besides, it is not only on Tuesdays that you can get a free tour, but more about that in a moment.
This time we will not start from the beginning but we will focus on Tuesday - the day when the offer has the widest scope. On this day of the week you can enter the permanent exhibitions for free.
In all branches of the National Museum:
Main Building - al. 3 maja 1. The Gallery shows works by all the most outstanding artists, from Stanisław Wyspiański, Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer to Andrzej Wróblewski, Wojciech Fangor, Łukasz Korolkiewicz and many others. The exhibition includes paintings, sculptures, glass and artistic ceramics.
Sukiennice - Rynek Główny 3. The Sukiennice is home to one of the largest permanent exhibitions of 19th-century Polish painting and sculpture in Poland. Including such famous names as Chełmoński and Michałowski.
Wyspiański Museum - Pl. Sikorskiego 6. The exhibition includes Wyspiański's own portraits and Self-portrait with his wife from 1904, supplemented by images of children (Sleeping Mietek, Helenka with a vase), as well as portraits of friends from the Krakow bohemian circle, including the painter Józef Mehoffer.
Czapski Museum and Czapski Pavilion - ul. Piłsudskiego 12. Collections of old prints and the Numismatic Cabinet founded in 1883, and in the Pavilion an exhibition that takes us on a journey through the extraordinary life of the writer and painter, but also along the trail of nightmares of the 20th century. The exhibition includes Czapski's diaries, unknown photos and documents, including those from the times of occupation and captivity.
The Jan Matejko House - ul. Floriańska 41. It contains works representing all phases of Jan Matejko's work.
The Czartoryski Princes Museum and Arsenal - ul. Pijarska 15. The exhibition includes not only masterpieces of world painting such as Lady with an Ermine by Leonardo da Vinci or Landscape with the Good Samaritan by Rembrandt van Rijn, but also works from the fields of painting, sculpture, crafts, militaria and applied art. It is also a huge collection of memorabilia presenting the history of Poland.The Mehoffer House - ul. Krupnicza 26. It is a museum-house of the artist, in this case with rich, authentic furnishings. Including numerous objects from the old furnishings of the house: many antique furniture, artistic crafts, a library, a collection of Japanese woodcuts, sculptures, photographs, family mementos and, above all, the works of Józef Mehoffer: oil paintings, drawings, graphics, decorative designs, stained glass windows.
Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace - ul. Kanonicza 17.
The exhibition presents a previously unknown collection of icons, which is one of the oldest and most valuable collections of Orthodox painting in Central Europe.
